The Different Types of Spark Plugs

All spark plugs for sale have the same function: create a spark inside an engine cylinder, which then ignites vaporized gasoline. The actual parts that generate this spark are called electrodes. There are two per plug: a "side/ground" and a "center" electrode.

The material used for the side/ground electrode is the main variance:

  • Copper: lowest performance and shortest lifespan, but the most affordable option
  • Platinum: better performance and a longer life, but more expensive than copper
  • Iridium: best performance and longevity, but the highest price

There are also variations like double platinum spark plugs for sale. This "double" designation simply means that both electrodes are made of platinum - single platinum spark plugs (which are just called "platinum") will have a platinum side/ground electrode, but a copper-based center electrode. As you can imagine, adding platinum to both electrodes makes the plugs last even longer. Iridium, though, will always be the ultimate spark-plug variant in terms of performance and longevity.

The majority of modern commuter cars will use platinum spark plugs from the factory, as they hit an ideal balance of quality and affordability. For example, the OEM spark plugs for a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 4.0-liter V-6 will be platinum (Mopar part number "SZFR5LP13G").

However, in high-performance engines, iridium spark plugs are oftentimes the OEM replacement: a 2021 Ram 2500 with the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 is an example of this, as it uses iridium OEM spark plugs (Mopar part number "SP138239AC").

Overall, like with choosing air filters for sale, it's best to check your car's owner's manual or factory service manual to determine the OEM-recommended spark plugs replacement type.

We can help with this if you're stuck. Contact the Mopar OEM team to find and order spark plugs online for your car.

Spark Plugs vs. Glow Plugs

When you shop spark plugs for sale, you'll likely see glow plugs displayed alongside spark plugs. Think of it like a gas station that offers both gasoline and diesel: you wouldn't put diesel in your gasoline-powered car, and vice versa.

In short, spark plugs are only meant for gasoline engines, while glow plugs are solely used in diesels. Like head gaskets vs. intake gaskets for sale, these different plugs have very different applications.

Spark plugs are what actually ignite the gasoline; glow plugs do not cause combustion, rather, they heat the diesel fuel to assist the compression-based ignition process. Diesel fuel, if you didn't know, is combusted via compression rather than sparks, so you will never see diesel spark plugs for sale. And the heat of a glow plug would interfere with the gasoline ignition process, so gas engines will never need glow plugs for sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Mopar spark plugs better than aftermarket options?

Mopar spark plugs will always be better than aftermarket options; they will be a specific factory-designated replacement for your car's spark plugs, so you can always trust that they'll meet manufacturer specifications and have an ideal balance of longevity, performance, and affordability. It's also harder to verify the fitment of aftermarket spark plugs, as the aftermarket brand has to cater to tons of different car makes and models.

How often should I replace my spark plugs?

Spark plug replacement intervals vary depending on a lot of factors, including the engine specifications and the type of spark plugs that you use. The range is vast: spark plugs can last anywhere from 30,000 to 120,000 miles, depending on those factors. If you choose iridium spark plugs for sale, you won't need to replace them as often.

Do you sell spark plugs individually or in sets?

We generally sell spark plugs individually, but can also offer sets with all the plugs you need. At Mopar OEM, we make it easy to buy spark plugs online: enter your vehicle's information into our search tool, and spark plugs for sale for your car will show up. The "Notes" or "Description" section may mention if the spark plugs are sold as a set.
