Car water pumps are hidden heroes. Nestled in the engine, a water pump is responsible for circulating coolant to the engine so that it can flow and do its job as the cylinders fire. As you might have guessed, a faulty water pump could lead to an overheated engine, which in turn becomes a catastrophically damaged one.

If you need a replacement or upgrade, we offer a range of Mopar water pump options for most Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and FIAT vehicles from the modern era, along with supporting components needed to overhaul the full cooling system. Contact the Mopar OEM team if you need any help, and order your water pump with fast shipping today.

Signs of a Bad Water Pump in a Car

As we've been emphasizing, a faulty or degrading water pump can lead to your engine overheating. Many other automotive issues, such as failing thermostats, can lead to the same disaster, too.

The first step we recommend is to inspect the system with professional guidance (or personal experience) to confirm that you need a water pump car replacement.

Aside from your engine overheating, if one or more of the following symptoms appear, it's probably time to look into getting a new car water pump:

  • The water pump's "weep hole" is leaking and/or has visible rust around it
  • A rhythmic grinding/whining noise comes from the front of the engine bay when the car is running
  • There's coolant leaking underneath the car
  • The water pump housing is rusty around the seals/gaskets

Can you fix the water pump on car models from recent years? Yes, technically, but it is often more time- and cost-effective to replace the entire water pump rather than opening up the current pump, fixing/replacing the internal components, and then resealing it.

Some Notes on Our Car Water Pumps

Most of the car water pumps for sale you see here are the entire pump, bearings, gaskets, and all. The belt for the hub is typically not included, however, as this belt is often the car's timing belt. If crucial components, such as the gasket, are not included, there will usually be a note in the "Description" section of the listing.

The hoses and clamps that lead to and from the water pump will often be listed separately, but can usually be found under the "Cooling Systems" category.

We highly recommend combining your water pump replacement with a timing belt replacement: The main steps to access the timing belt are usually the same steps involved in a water pump replacement, and if one needs to go, they both should be replaced for the sake of vehicle longevity.

Likewise, a full cooling-system overhaul, from radiators to car water pumps, is usually a good call if your car is experiencing such issues. We offer all of those components as well: Enter your car's details into our search filter, and shop cooling systems at Mopar OEM now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a water pump do on a car?

As the name suggests, a water pump for car or truck engines will pump coolant through the cooling system. This solution flows through channels in the engine, then through a radiator, and back through the system, cooling the engine down by removing heat. Since car water pumps are essentially the heart of the cooling system, a bad water pump will lead to your engine overheating.

How do you replace a water pump in a car?

Replacing a water pump takes several steps. After locating your water pump, drain the coolant fully and dispose it. Next, you may need to remove the battery and serpentine and timing belt, depending on your model. Then, remove the old water pump and install the new one, along with any belts and other components necessary. Refill the coolant, and be sure to check for any leaks by starting your engine.

What are the parts of a water pump?

Car water pumps are usually composed of six main parts:

  • Housing: the metal body of the water pump
  • Hub: a part that is typically spun by the engine timing belt
  • Shaft: connects the hub to the impeller
  • Bearing(s): reduces friction to let the shaft spin efficiently
  • Impeller: a fan that creates pressure and pumps water
  • Gasket(s): seals the housing to a backplate and prevents leaks
